about
I wrote this the song the night I learned my 12-year-old dog Copper was likely very close to the end of his life. Two days later, I played it for him for the first and only time; a vet came to my house an hour afterward and put him down. Some footage from his last few hours is in the song's music video, which you can find here: youtu.be/fx8j32KtSh0
lyrics
When you finally close your eyes what if I can't find you
It's been so long since I have been myself without you
When I felt I was one foot away you were there with me
Our future plans kept me from stepping in now you're ahead of me
I wish I had been able to give you the life that I'll live
Cuz lately I've been just straying behind
You age twice as fast I'd like to
It seems yesterday you would endlessly play
Now I'm trying but can't understand
This is the end
You walked me by your side, the sounds you love surround you
You never questioned why when my starving was my full view
You'd never doubt when we'd stay out for hours just so I'd fit in
But when you'd ask if we could stay the path I would turn us in
I wish I had been able to give you the years that we missed
Cuz lately I've been just straying behind
You move twice as slow as I'd like to
I paid with my days now you're wasting away
And I'm trying to not understand
This is the end
What good is preemptive lamenting
You're with me on the floor and sleeping soundly as I write this song
But I'm scared this memory will fade
And I'll forget how much you made
My steps worth taking
Can I take your place
Cuz lately I just can't make up my mind
I can't quite feel strong but I'd like to
I'm counting the days and you're dying to stay
And I wish that you could understand
This is the end
I'd give up my days if it meant you could stay love
Please save me a spot and we'll meet at the end
